McPherson to host labor experts in panel

February 27, 2002

The interests of workers around the world will be discussed at 7 p.m. today.

The Journal of International Law will present “Labor Rights in a Free Trade World: Paradigm or Paradox?” at the Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre.

A panel of trade representatives, business leaders, economists and scholars will be moderated by MSU President M. Peter McPherson.

Jami Witbeck, managing editor of events for the Journal of International Law, said Labor expert Bill Fletcher will challenge the panel on its beliefs.

“He has some different views on labor rights than the rest of the panel,” she said. “He thinks that the system we have right now is fundamentally wrong.”

She said Fletcher will address the audience and panel, then each member of the panel will have four minutes to respond.

Panelists will include William Clatanoff, who will talk about free trade across the Americas, Ed Lorenz, a historian from Alma College, and Ambassador Tom Niles, who is the president of the U.S. Council for International Business.
