Lansing youths die in car, bus collision

February 11, 2002

Two Lansing youths died in a car accident Saturday night when the Oldsmobile Cutlass they were riding in collided with a Capitol Area Transportation Authority bus.

Jared Heintzelman,17, and Anthony Bermudez,12, were killed on the corner of Shiawasee and Larch streets at 10:04 p.m., Lansing police officer Lt. Ray Hall said.

The car was hit by the bus on the driver’s side and pushed into a fire hydrant, where it flipped over.

Bermudez was pronounced dead at the scene and Heintzelman, the driver, was pronounced dead at Sparrow Hospital a short time later.

Two other passengers, brothers Shaun and Kyle Cranmer were transported to Sparrow Hospital. Shaun remains in critical condition and Kyle is in stable condition.

The four people in the CATA bus, three passengers and a driver, were not seriously injured.

Heintzelman was a junior at Eastern High School, 220 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Lansing.

His grandmother Gleneden Heintzelman said he was loved by his entire family. She also said he loved outdoor sports.

“He liked paintball and hunting,” she said. “He liked doing family things and loved snowmobiling.”

Elva Medrano, Bermudez’s aunt said while he was shy, he also was an outgoing seventh-grader at Pattengill Middle School, 1017 Jerome St. in Lansing

“He loved to Rollerblade and skateboard, he was very good at it,” she said. “He loved school.”

Medrano said Bermudez’s death will be extremely hard for her 12-year-old son.

“They were only six months apart and they hung out all the time,” she said.

Both families said they will know today about memorial services and funeral arrangements.

Hall said the police department is compiling crash data and witness testimony to determine who is at fault.
