Teach For America recruiting students Monday for service

January 25, 2002

Teach For America recruiters will have an open house from noon to 2 p.m. Monday in room 13 Student Services. The featured speaker is a former Teach For America participant who will be sharing her own experiences in the program.

Teach For America is a nationwide program that allows new college graduates to spend two years teaching students in rural and urban areas around the United States. Depending on need, graduates will be sent to places such as Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Mississippi.

The school districts involved often are ones where families live in low-income areas, sometimes lacking housing or money for school lunch.

The program is looking for people to teach elementary and secondary levels, as well as anybody willing to work with special education students and fluent Spanish speakers.

Sasha Jones, a higher adult and lifelong education graduate student in the program, is a campaign coordinator on campus. She will be participating in the program in the fall, teaching children in Detroit.

“It’s a chance to make an immediate impact,” Jones said. “I currently work with youth, and I decided that after graduation I wanted to continue to teach and make a difference.”
