Men, women lose in Big Ten tournament

November 12, 2001

The MSU men’s soccer (12-5-1) team didn’t have enough over the weekend to knock off two top 25 opponents in the 2001 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Championship in Madison, Wis.

After a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over No. 11 Penn State in the semifinals Saturday, the Spartans entered Sunday’s final against No. 4 Indiana and left with a 2-0 loss.

The Hoosiers outshot MSU 9-1 in the first half and Indiana didn’t register a goal until the second half when Indiana’s Michael Bock scored in the 67th minute.

In the second half MSU showed more control, outshooting the Hoosiers 5-4, but Indiana’s John Swann sealed the victory after tapping the ball past MSU goalkeeper Mike Robinson off of teammate Tyler Hawley’s header.

Sunday’s victory gives the Hoosiers an automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA Tournament.

MSU midfielder Jeffrey Krass and defender Kellen Kalso earned Big Ten All-Tournament honors over the weekend.

MSU’s 12 wins are the most since 1996 when the Spartans also tallied 12 victories. The Spartans still have a chance at the NCAA tournament - the field of 48 will be decided Nov. 19.

Women’s Soccer

Intrastate rivals MSU and No. 20 Michigan met in the 2001 Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament quarterfinals in West Lafayette, Ind. on Thursday.

The Wolverines defeated the Spartans 2-0 in a game that remained scoreless until the clock read 86:45.

MSU’s record now rests at 10-8-2 and Michigan improved to 12-6-1.

For the Spartans, sophomore goalkeeper Stacy Heller had four saves until the Wolverines first strike landed in the goal giving Michigan the advantage 1-0.

The Michigan offense outshot MSU 13-3.
