Black activist to speak on campus

November 15, 2001

Dick Gregory, an activist for social change and human rights, will be speaking on campus today.

His speech, sponsored by the Black History Committee and the University Activities Board, will be held at 7 p.m. at the Union in parlors A, B and C.

Gregory is notable for his involvement in the civil rights movement, hunger strikes, world peace and the invention of the Bahamian Diet. He is also a notable comedian and author of various books on issues affecting black people.

Darren Lamb, programming director for Black Student Alliance, said although older generations are more knowledgeable about Gregory, younger generations can benefit from his visit.

“I consider it an honor to be able to get an important mind like Dick Gregory at MSU so he can share some of his input about our struggles today,” the journalism senior said. “As far as our generation is concerned, it will do them well to find out exactly what he is all about.”

Lamb said he would not have known about Gregory’s impact without some guidance.

“If my parents hadn’t told me about Dick Gregory, I probably would be clueless,” he said. “It’s definitely good exposure for students to match a face and get to see who their parents have been talking about.”

BSA President Mary Phillips said after hearing Gregory speak at the Black Power Rally in 1999, she was excited to hear that he was returning to MSU.

“I think he is going to have a lot of really important things for us to hear,” the health studies senior said. “He is an exceptional leader and he was very active during the civil rights movement and the community in general.”

Phillips said Gregory’s involvement should encourage students to hear him speak.

“This is a man who believes in justice and equality for all people, and he is a scholar,” she said. “We need to know the history and get his perspective to help us put things together.”

Tim Arbeiter, assistant manager of activities for the University Activities Office, said he thinks the content of Gregory’s lecture will set it apart from others.

“I think it’s a wonderful thing for Dick Gregory to come in,” he said. “There are a lot of lecturers out there, but this one will really catch attention and be worthwhile to attend.”
