In an effort to spread awareness and gain information about women’s issues, Feminists Ending the Misogynist System sponsored the Feminist Fun March on Tuesday afternoon at the rock on Farm Lane.

The event was in honor of National Young Womyn’s Day of Action, a campaign designed to end gender discrimination by educating women and promoting activism. The rally was also an opportunity for students to discuss upcoming events relating to feminism.

Jennifer Dunn, a women’s studies sophomore who helped create Feminists Ending the Misogynist System last spring, said it is a radical feminist group dedicated to activism.

“It’s about celebrating feminism and encouraging it,” she said. “It’s important for women to get together and address the oppression we face in our lives.”

Miranda Scripter, a Lansing Community College freshman, also said women need to gather to express their views as often as possible to generate progress.

But Scripter said many women are apathetic about activism.

“Women in general are ignorant of their plight and need to be aware of it,” she said. “Every little thing can add up.”

Sarah McDonald, a journalism sophomore and group member, said marches are a good opportunity to promote activism.

“It’s important to get the word out in the feminist community because there’s a lot of opposition,” she said.

But the event wasn’t geared toward women only.

English sophomore Brian Solomon was one of a few men who attended the march.

He said he supports all campus activities that allow people to express their views - whatever they may be.

“I think there are standards that both sexes are expected to live up to,” he said. “Women should voice up.”
