ASMSU aids ailing IM sports arenas

October 9, 2001

Members of ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, and administrators will meet today to discuss how to improve the intramural facilities on campus.

Fred Poston, vice president for finance and operations, and Lee June, vice president for student affairs and services, are scheduled to talk with the Intramural Sports Ad-hoc Committee, which consists of eight ASMSU members.

ASMSU Student Assembly Chairperson Quinn Wright said he’s hoping to continue the work of his predecessors.

“This is the third year of the project that was started by Mike Webber,” he said. Webber was Student Assembly chairperson in 1999.

Last March, ASMSU engaged Brailsford & Dunlavey to make some preliminary assessments of the current facilities and suggest improvement strategies.

ASMSU funded $10,000 of the $15,000 assessment. The Office of Intramural Sports and Recreative Services paid the rest.

Wright said he is glad the administration is serious about improving the facilities.

“They are in poor quality, and it is not a representation of the prestige of this university,” he said.

At a Student Assembly meeting last month, Rick McNeil, assistant director of Intramural Sports and Recreative Services, presented four strategies from the company.

The different plans would range in cost from $50 million to $88 million, which could mean a new fee for student recreation - between $43 and $75 a semester.

McNeil said the facilities at other Michigan universities have been renovated or renewed over the past 10 years.

“The facilities here are lacking in terms of what Central, Western, Grand Valley State and Oakland (universities) have,” he said.

McNeil said he hopes today’s meeting will help planners figure out what the next step will be - then go from there.

He said he understands it’s a challenge for MSU to allocate money with other priorities happening on campus.

“There’s a lot going on and it’s difficult to find what extent this project fits into,” he said.
