Notre Dame game showed patriotism

As one of thousands who took a lot from this weekend’s game, I just want to say thanks to Michigan State for the patriotic spirit you displayed.

In holding up signs of the American flag and chanting “U.S.A.” before the game and during halftime we confirmed America and all she stands for, hopefully offering some support for those who need it most at this time.

The halftime show was something that won’t soon be forgotten. State has a sharp band, and it was an impressive sight to watch it march onto the field to join the Irish band. Playing “Amazing Grace” surely spoke to the souls of many, both those in your community and ours affected by the events of Sept. 11.

Seeing the two bands come together for America was a proud moment for everyone who could see it. Several said this was the best halftime show they’d ever seen.

People all over the stadium were cheering their hearts out, and in that roar a person could hear the voice of this country. That unified spirit exemplifies what makes America great.

Our hearts at Notre Dame go out to anyone with Michigan State ties who has been affected by the terrorism. We also hope for junior Paul Harkerand for his speedy recovery.

As we take a step away from the thrill of competition to focus more on our United States, the words of Abraham Lincoln read during halftime ring true, that “from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion - that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
