Things are good in the world of MSU volleyball.

The Spartans (7-0) are off to their best start in 12 years, and one of their star players is the reigning Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week.

Senior outside hitter Erin Hartley earned the honor with an MVP effort in the Coca-Cola Spartan Invitational, which the Spartans won this weekend.

MSU topped Bowling Green, Idaho and Winthrop for the title, and Hartley led all tournament players with 51 kills, 14 blocks, 36 digs and a .536 hitting percentage.

Hartley’s coach joined the conference in singing her praises this week.

“She had a phenomenal weekend,” MSU head coach Chuck Erbe said. “She’s really on top of her game. Statistically, she’s the best I’ve seen in two years. She’s healthy, practicing well, playing well and really enjoying her experiences playing with this team.”

With 12 kills, Hartley was one dig and one block short of recording a triple-double against Idaho. She also amassed 20 kills and 18 digs in the Winthrop match - both personal season-highs.

For the season, Hartley leads MSU with 117 kills, 33 blocks and a .417 hitting percentage and ranks second with 56 digs. She has also been named to the all-tournament teams of MSU’s first two tournaments this year and was a Preseason All-Big Ten Team selection.
