Cross country makes poll, readies for meet

September 28, 2001

The MSU men’s and women’s cross country teams will be traveling Saturday to Minnesota for the Roy Griak Invitational.

Both teams are coming off impressive showings at last week’s Spartan Invitational at Forest Akers East Golf Course. Among collegiate opponents, both teams placed first in the nonscored event.

Ann Somerville placed first and three other Spartans placed in the top five at the invite, helping the team earn the No. 26 ranking in the FinishLynx NCAA Women’s Cross Country Associated Poll.

A first-place finish from junior Ben Evans at the invite helped the men’s team grab No. 26 in the Mondo NCAA cross-country poll.

In Minneapolis, the men face opposition from 15 nationally ranked opponents including No. 5 Providence and No. 6 Wisconsin.

The women will have to deal with No. 8 Arizona and No. 9 Providence.
