No. 3 field hockey ranking highest in MSU history

August 29, 2001

After knocking off two heavyweights on its opening weekend, MSU skyrocketed to No. 3 in the Hockey Point coaches’ poll released Monday.

The Spartans (2-0) garnered four first-place votes and now occupy the highest ranking in school history.

MSU, which received votes but wasn’t ranked in the preseason top 10, upset No. 1-ranked Old Dominion 3-2 in overtime Saturday and then blanked No. 6 Wake Forest 2-0 on Sunday.

“When you beat two good teams like Wake Forest and Old Dominion - they’ll be in the top 10 the entire year, so as long as they’re in it, we’ll be in it too,” MSU Head Coach Michele Madison said.

North Carolina (1-0) received five first-place votes and is ranked No. 1 in this week’s poll, followed by Maryland (2-0) at No. 2 with one first-place vote.

Wake Forest (1-1) actually rose into a tie for fourth place with Michigan (1-1), which was ranked fourth in the preseason. Princeton (0-0) received a first-place vote and is ranked No. 6, and Old Dominion (0-2) fell to No. 7.

The Spartans play at Stanford at 4 p.m. Friday and then play Pacific in Palo Alto, Calif., at 1 p.m. Sunday
