Black heritage to be celebrated in Lansing pride parade

August 2, 2001

This weekend, some Lansing streets will be flooded with a showcase of pride.

The second Annual African American Pride Parade will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Community members of all colors and creeds are welcome to come celebrate the event held in the capital, Lansing City Councilmember Louis Adado said.

“It is an opportunity to show (African American) culture to the rest of the community,” Adado said.

Adado said there will be demonstrators and a variety of chances for Lansing residents to become more culturally diverse.

Adado said many residents received the celebration well during the first annual parade last year.

“(It was) held at the same time and place and I believe they had 1,000 people (show up),” he said.

The parade will start at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Pere Marquette Drive and will travel in a circle, ending on Pere Marquette.

To celebrate the day, Lansing police Chief Mark Alley will lead the parade through the streets.

Lansing police Lt. Ray Hall said it certainly is an honor for Alley.

“We’re very fortunate in the city of Lansing to have a number of groups with rich cultural backgrounds. Anytime we can celebrate a culture with a rich background, it’s celebrating the community,” he said.

Hall said Alley is heavily involved with community cultural celebrations, such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Cesar Chavez celebrations. Hall said Alley has also launched a racial-profiling collecting process to assess the issue of racial profiling in Lansing.

“(Alley) believes in building bridges. He’s committed to building race relations in the city,” Hall said. “He’s trying to increase understanding and reduce tension between police and certain segments of the community.”
