Lugnut duo headed to Ohio for All-Star Classic

June 11, 2001

The Lansing Lugnuts will be represented by two players at the Midwest League All-Star Classic on June 19 at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio.

Shortstop Luis Montanez and pitcher Aaron Krawiec were the only Lugnuts selected to compete in the annual game.

Montanez will be the East All-Star team’s starting shortstop. As of June 4, Montanez was batting .264 with a pair of home runs and 28 RBIs.

Krawiec was selected as a reserve pitcher for the East All-Stars. Krawiec set a Lugnuts record April 29 by striking out 17 batters. Krawiec is 3-4 with a 5.02 ERA in his 10 starts as a Lugnut.

The Midwest League’s East All-Stars are made up of players from Lansing, the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Dayton Dragons, the South Bend Silver Hawks and the Fort Wayne Wizards.

Player of the month

First baseman Blair Barbier was named the Budweiser Player of the Month for May. Barbier batted .427 with 41 hits, including 12 doubles, and collected 18 RBIs for the month. He also added 10 multi-hit games to his résumé, including two four-hit games.

Cheesed

Lansing’s game against the Wisconsin TimberRattlers was canceled Sunday because of weather and the Green Bay Packers. When the team arrived at Fox Cities Stadium, it was told its game was canceled and the Packers charity game against a local radio station would continue. The Lugnuts game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader today at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Lugnuts are currently 24-38 and are on an eight-game road trip heading into the All-Star break.
