Hockey player to receive congressional award

May 30, 2001

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers will honor MSU hockey player Ryan Miller with an award of congressional recognition today at MacDonald Middle School, 1601 Burcham Drive.

The junior goaltender will accept the prize in front of eighth-graders, including his younger brother, Bryce Miller.

“We’re both pretty excited,” Miller said. “(Bryce) even is ready to give an acceptance speech of his own.”

Miller logged his 18th career shutout last season, shattering a 70-year-old NCAA career shutout record.

He also was awarded the league’s Hobey Baker Award, which is comparable to college football’s Heisman Trophy.

But Rogers’ visit won’t all be hockey talk.

“It’s not just going to be fun and games; Representative Rogers and Ryan are going to be discussing the importance of academics with the students,” said Sylvia Warner, the Brighton Republican’s spokeswoman.
