Dansville w-hoops recruit may choose U

May 30, 2001

Dansville High junior Lindsay Bowen will announce her fate as a college basketball player at her 10:30 a.m. press conference today.

Bowen, a 5-foot-7 point guard, has narrowed her search to nine schools, including MSU, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wake Forest, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Oakland and Toledo.

Bowen received scholarship offers from each of the schools, and now those schools must wait for the final verdict because only Bowen knows where she will end up in Fall 2002, Dansville varsity women’s basketball coach Stuart Thorburn said.

“We requested of her not to say until 10:30 a.m.,” he said. “Her parents will know (right before the announcement).”

Thorburn said MSU started recruiting Bowen when she was in eighth grade, but said that doesn’t necessarily mean MSU is her front-runner.

“(It’s) hard to say,” Thorburn said of the leader of the race for Bowen. “Four Big Ten schools have been in there. Ball State, of the (Mid-American Conference) has too.”

Thorburn is also a social studies teacher and said Bowen is “an excellent student.” Bowen has accumulated a 3.87 grade-point average in her three years of high school and Thorburn said academics will be a big factor in her college decision.

But academics aren’t the only discipline in which Bowen has achieved big numbers. She led the state of Michigan in scoring with an average of 32.05 points per game last season.

Bowen was the captain of her basketball team in the fall and Thorburn said she will occupy that role again next year. A three-year Class C All-State honoree, Bowen will be a leading candidate for the state’s Ms. Basketball Award - given annually to the top senior player in Michigan.
