GVSU considers former U official

February 26, 2001

A former MSU vice president is among three finalists running to become Grand Valley State University’s next president.

One of the candidates, State Treasurer Mark Murray, served as MSU vice president of finance from September 1998 until January 1999 before taking his current position in 1999.

Murray is also an education policy adviser to Gov. John Engler.

Dorothy Johnson, chairwoman of the Grand Valley State presidential search committee, announced the candidates Friday.

“The pool was diverse, with very qualified applicants from throughout the nation,” Johnson said in a written statement. “The committee is proud and enthusiastic about the candidate we’re presenting to the Board of Trustees.”

Murray said he would be pleased to apply his background in education at Grand Valley State.

“I am honored; I think it is a great university and I am pleased to be considered for their next president,” Murray said.

Ronald L. Applbaum, president of Kean University in New Jersey, and Owen Francis Cargol, president of the University of Maine at Augusta, also are candidates to replace Grand Valley President Arend Lubbers, who is retiring in June.

Murray said Grand Valley has strong undergraduate and masters education programs, which makes the position attractive. He will visit the campus Thursday.

“I’ll have a chance to meet with students, faculty, staff, alumni and others in the campus community,” Murray said. “I’ll explain who I am and my vision, but more importantly learn their concerns and questions about the future of the institution.”

While state treasurer, Murray dealt with educational matters. He was responsible for administering the Michigan Merit Award and directing the Michigan Education Assessment Program testing.

He also serves as a member of the appointed Detroit School Board. Murray was involved in the state taking control of the board.

MSU President M. Peter McPherson said his friend and former colleague would be an excellent choice for the position as Grand Valley State’s president.

“He has a very analytical mind and he has a good understanding of finance,” McPherson said. “He is a good problem-solver.”

McPherson said while at MSU, Murray was behind the change from a campus busing system to incorporating the Capitol Area Transportation Authority.

He said the new system has seen increased use and allowed students to access off-campus destinations easier.

“While at MSU, he was involved in everything from athletics to campus housing,” McPherson said. “I think Mark is capable of being a good president.”
