Police briefs 01/23/01

A 19-year-old student was robbed at gunpoint late Sunday night near the Business College Complex. The student was walking eastbound at about 11:15 p.m. along the south side of the Red Cedar River when he was approached by four men who demanded he turn over his valuables, MSU police Detective Tony Willis said. One of the men had a handgun.Willis said the student told the men he didn’t have anything valuable, but one of the men frisked him and took a cellular phone and his wallet. The four men then ran westbound from the area. Police dog searches failed to pick up the men’s trail. The stolen items are valued at $159. An investigation is ongoing.Willis recommends people walk in groups at night whenever possible and be aware of their surroundings.“If you feel uncomfortable of someone or a situation, immediately find a group of people or a green-light phone,” Willis said.Emergency telephones are scattered throughout campus along sidewalks and in parking lots and structures for use to call police or any campus telephone number.A green light is placed above each of the phones.
