New hotline offers answers to financial aid questions

A temporary hotline for college students with questions about financial aid was announced Monday.

The new hotline, intended to make filling out forms for financial aid a little easier, the has opened up with special hours to ensure that questions can be answered.

The Michigan Department of Treasury, already runs a special hotline for information on the programs in financial aid year-round. The number for the hotline is (888) 775-7892.

Those working within the program hope it will provide access to valuable information and help those dealing with any complications from the sometimes stressful college application process.

“January is usually the time when parents and students start filling out the financial aid forms,” said Bridget Medina, press spokeswoman for the Department of Treasury.

“You can call this number at any time during the year - it’s extended hours. You can also call this number at any time for any of the awards.”

The awards Medina spoke of are special programs also set up by the Treasury Department.

The awards include the Michigan Education Savings Program, the Michigan Merit Award Program, and the Michigan Education Trust program.

In a written statement, State Treasurer Mark A. Murray commented on the hotline.

“We are dedicated to providing information on college financing through our Web site and toll-free numbers year-round,” Murray said.

The hotline began on Monday and continues until Thursday. The phones will be answered between 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. by the Michigan Student Aid Association.

Information on the programs is also available on a Department of Treasury and Student financial aid web site located at www.MI-StudentAid.org.
