Christ did exist, Bible proves it

I am writing in response to Brian Selewski’s letter “Christ’s beliefs not felt by all” (SN 1/23). Obviously, he has never taken a history class in his entire life, or he would realize much of our evidence from 2,000 years ago comes from the Bible itself.

I don’t see why he finds it hard to believe in a man who lived 2,000 years ago - does he find it hard to believe Homer, Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra or Aristotle existed? Probably not, because these figures don’t pertain to a major religion and are not surrounded in controversy. I find it hard to handle ignorant comments from people who have neither read the Bible nor used it as a historical source, because a person cannot fully understand its significance until they do so.

I do not state this only as a Christian, but as an educated human being. I did not base my choice of faith upon only the Bible - I have read other religious books such as the Torah, the Koran and the Baghavad Gita. They are all wonderful spiritual and historical documents, and they all teach basic human compassion.

Religion is one of the main sources of the idea behind civil rights, and should be acknowledged as such. Before Judaism, the majority of religions were not moralistic. Many of our beliefs today stem from religious documents such as the Ten Commandments.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man who pushed society toward change, but there have been great men and women in all times. Christ is included in this group - he taught that all people are created equal in God’s eyes and that we should love one another, regardless of race or ethnicity. Sound familiar?

I suggest Selewski should have several books written about his life before he dies, or the world might deny he existed in 2,000 years.
