U can find out latest in E.L. entertainment without going outside

January 11, 2001

MSU students can now find out what’s happening at their favorite club, when the latest blockbuster is being released or what the hottest CD is with the click of their mouse.

LansingVibe.com is a company that started last fall and advertises local events such as bar specials, movie times and concerts online.

“LansingVibe is an excellent site to see what\'s going on in the Lansing area, especially if you are looking for an East Lansing bar,” MSU journalism senior Dan DeCapua said. “If you are looking for things outside of East Lansing to do I would give the site a while to catch on.”

“If you are interested in the latest drink specials, though, this is the place to go. This site has a lot of potential with a classified and movie section.”

Michael Flaminio, co-founder of the Web site, said LansingVibe.com is something long overdue.

“It’s one of those things that you would say to friends, ‘I wish something like this existed,’” he said. “In the summer we got the ball rolling and now it\'s running.”

Flaminio, along with Tim First, put the business together, combining their extensive background in computers and networking to tailor the Web site to any local business.

“We want LansingVibe.com to be a one-stop entertainment and recreation resource for the Lansing area,” Flaminio said. “Right now we have a comprehensive entertainment guide for MSU students and Lansing/East Lansing area residents. We want it to be habit forming.”

Some students, including Lymann Briggs sophomore Mya Grace, said she would use the Web site if she had known it was out there.

“It sounds useful because I can find out about everything that’s happening in my area,” Grace said.

Flaminio said the appeal of the site is that it\'s tailored to the area and updated very often. Most items are updated hourly and movie show times are updated every five minutes, removing the show times that have already past.”There\'s no hunting through small type for the next time, the first show you see at LansingVibe is the next one you could catch,” he said.

There is also a bars and clubs section that lists drink specials and entertainment such as band appearances or theme nights.

“We hope to get in touch with local bands and set up pages for them at LansingVibe,” Flaminio said. “The end result is more people experience their music, and more people see them when they play locally, which is good for local businesses.”

Jamie Weeks works in the marketing department at Trippers Sports Bar and Grill, 354 Frandor in Lansing, and said once things really get moving and the Web site has marketing numbers, Trippers looks forward to doing business with them.

“It’s a pretty informative site. It has everything in Lansing in one place,” she said.

Kim Wathen, assistant manager of Beggars Banquet, 218 Abbot Rd., believes her business has benefited from being featured on LansingVibe.com.

“We’ve been having a more diverse clientele and more people are coming in,” she said. “It’s a great way to advertise to some people who may not read the paper.”
