Man in jail after driving stolen van

November 6, 2000

A 21-year-old man is being held in the Ingham County Jail on bond following a Saturday afternoon car chase.

At 12:35 p.m., an MSU police officer noticed a man driving a stolen minivan on campus near Harrison Avenue and Trowbridge Road, MSU police Lt. Kelly Beck said.

The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over by making a routine traffic stop near the intersection but the driver resisted. A chase ensued, winding its way into Lansing.

MSU police contacted the Lansing Police Department for assistance in stopping and arresting the man.

A little while into the chase, the suspect ditched his car in Lansing on Jolly Road near Dunckel Road, police said. The chase continued from there on foot. The man was soon apprehended near the intersection by a Lansing police officer.

He is being held on $6,000 bond and is charged with fleeing and eluding police, receiving and concealing stolen property, driving on a suspended license and possession of a stolen credit card.

Beck said the car the man was driving had been stolen from a location in Lansing earlier in the week. Its locks had been punched out and the steering column was ripped out allowing the car to be driven without a key.

While the vehicle was stolen in Lansing, MSU police are investigating whether this car theft is connected to several other car thefts on campus last week, based on the similarity of the crimes.

“We processed the vehicle for any kind of prints that may have been on it,” Beck said. “Then we’ll see if any of the prints came out and if they match prints done on another of the stolen cars that was recovered last week.”

One of the other vehicles stolen on campus last week, a 1990 four-door gray Buick LeSabre, was used in a bank robbery at Michigan National Bank, 1390 W. Lake Lansing Road, at 10:15 a.m. Thursday.

Two male suspects entered the bank taking an undisclosed amount of money from a bank teller held at gunpoint, police said.

Beck said there is no indication if the man arrested Saturday is connected with the robbery or the string of car thefts and break-ins on campus last week.
