Earlier this semester, studio art Professor Peter Glendinning aided studio art seniors in STA 492, Senior Seminar and Professional Practice.
After helping most of his students put on their first art exhibit as part of the class, Glendinning, along with other faculty members, will exhibit artwork in the Faculty Exhibition 2000 at Kresge Art Museum starting Friday.
Its going to be spectacular, museum curator April Kingsley said. Ive seen a few of the artists works in galleries, and theyre really terrific.
The artists will display their most recent pieces, including everything from paintings and drawings to computer-generated prints and multimedia installations.
The exhibit will give students a chance to get pointers about their specific field, studio art senior Roy Gambrell said.
Artist Jim Hopfensperger plans on focusing on the fundamentals of art. Hopfensperger is the chairperson of the Department of Art.
The faculty members are using this opportunity to help create a new knowledge about art. The purpose of the exhibit is to integrate all three of MSUs missions: research, teaching and service or outreach.
An artists research is creating a new piece; theyre teaching by showing the piece to students, and outreach is putting it into a public environment, Hopfensperger said.
Although the exhibitors are professors, theyre also professional artists, many of whom display their artwork nationally or internationally.
This demonstrates to the students what it is (the professors) do constantly, said Hopfensperger, who also makes furniture.
Gambrell is looking forward to seeing all the professors works, especially studio art professors Joseph Kuszai and Brian Boldon. He is interested in these artists because of their fields.
Kuszai was one of my favorite professors. He does a lot of graphic design, advertising animation and video editing; thats what Im interested in, Gambrell said. Boldon was once a guest speaker in one of my classes. He creates really exciting and elaborate installations.
There will be a reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Kresge Art Museum to celebrate the exhibit opening.
The exhibit formally opens Saturday and runs until Dec. 5.
