Fan-pleaser U2 produces yet another solid album

All That You Can’t Leave Behind

(Interscope Records)

After 20 years, U2 still knows how to please its fans. The band’s latest effort, released Tuesday, is 50 minutes of classic U2.

What “All That You Can’t Leave Behind,” U2’s 10th studio album, lacks in innovation, it makes up for with a sound only U2 could put out. The album goes from mellow to upbeat and back again, sending the listener on a ride through the world that is U2.

The first three songs set the mood for the rest of the album. “Beautiful Day,” the feel-good first single from the album, flows into the slower “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out of,” which gives way to “Elevation,” a song that seems destined to sit atop the pop and dance charts.

“In a Little While” has a bit of slow funk, reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Californication,” but is distinctly U2.

And the lullaby-style “Grace” is a perfect end to the album, practically inducing a blissful sleep as it fades away.

Bono’s passionate vocals are complemented by The Edge’s versatile and melodious guitar throughout the album.

And while the lyrics sometimes become clichéd and over-rhymed, the quality of Bono’s voice makes that a minor inconvenience.

It’s an album that could just as easily be used as the day’s sole entertainment as it could for calming background noise. Whether fast or slow, each track seems to relax as it entertains.

“All That You Can’t Leave Behind” leaves behind the gimmicks of “Pop,” giving way to entertaining melodies and the essence of U2 that fans have grown to love in the past two decades.
