E.L. police search for three robbery suspects

November 3, 2000

East Lansing police are looking for three suspects who robbed a bank in East Lansing on Thursday morning.

At approximately 10:15 a.m. two men entered Michigan National Bank, 1390 W. Lake Lansing Road, and held a bank teller at gunpoint while taking an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The men were armed with what appeared to be 9 mm handguns, police said.

The first man is about 190 pounds, black and was wearing a tan First Down brand jacket. The second man was also black and weighed about 200 pounds and wore a light blue jogging suit.

A description of the third suspect, who was driving the getaway car, was not available.

After gathering the money, the men exited the bank and jumped into a car waiting outside. They left the scene and headed westbound on Lake Lansing Road toward U.S. 127.

This is the third bank robbery in East Lansing since August. The first was Aug. 31 at Citizens Bank, 1331 E. Grand River Ave., and the second was Sept. 4 at Michigan National Bank, 2731 E. Grand River Ave.

East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said it is too early in the investigation to determine if any of these cases are related, but the suspects in those robberies have not been caught.

The car used in Thursday’s robbery was a 1990 four-door gray Buick LeSabre that had no hubcaps. It had a dark landau roof, which makes it look like a soft top but actually is a hard top.

The car was reported stolen from campus Wednesday and is one of three stolen this week.

MSU police Detective Tony Willis hopes by finding those responsible for the robbery, they may also find the person or persons responsible for the car thefts.

“If we find who robbed the bank that may tell us who stole the cars as well or lead us to who stole them,” he said.

It is also possible that the three auto thefts aren’t related.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the East Lansing Police Department at 337-2599 or the East Lansing tip line at 1-877-ELPD-TIP.
