ASMSU could fund facility renovations

November 2, 2000

The fate of ASMSU’s campaign to help fund renovations to the university’s intramural sports facilities will be in its own hands tonight.

A proposal to further the project is up for consideration by the undergraduate student government’s Student Assembly.

“We are at the end result of phase one,” said Kendall Sykes, ASMSU Student Assembly chairperson.

The second phase of the plan would enable ASMSU to consult with architects, seek different methods of funding and perform student surveys to get a better idea of renovation cost estimates.

Rick McNeil, assistant director for Intramural Sports and Recreative Services, said one method of funding used throughout the country is the implementing of student fees.

“All of them had a dedicated student fee to help pay for their facilities,” he said.

Sykes assures, however, ASMSU will seek other ways to pay for the renovations before considering new student fees. Even if fees are initiated, Sykes says it won’t affect any current students. Some students say they would not mind paying the extra fee.

“I would definitely pay it, as long as it is not out outrageous,” said Bryan Piendel, an engineering arts junior who exercises in the IM Sports-West weight room every day.

Concerns for the condition of the facilities first arose when some students approached the Student Assembly last November with concerns about IM Sports-West.

Because little renovation has ensued at the intramural facilities, they are considered out-of-date compared to other school’s, Sykes said.

“We deserve to have better IMs,” he said.
