Cross country teams end fall season

Men’s cross country

Freshman Steve Padgett paced the 16th-ranked Spartans to a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis. on Sunday.

Padgett earned All-Big Ten honors, placing sixth with a time of 24:26.

Sixth-ranked Wisconsin won its 35th conference title, topping second place Indiana by 36 points. Penn State, MSU and Minnesota rounded out the top five.

Badgers took the top two individual spots, as Jason Vanderhoof and Jared Cordes ran a 24:01 and 24:08, respectively.

In addition to Padgett, sophomore Ben Evans and freshman Andy Marsh ran well at the meet for the Spartans. Both runners came in with a time of 24:50.

Sophomores Brian Wilson, Jared Aldrich, Andrew Alley and Jeff Mulder and freshman Aaron Usher rounded out the Spartan team.

Women’s cross country

Wisconsin completed its sweep of Big Ten championships as the women’s team triumphed at Yahara Hills Golf Course in Madison, Wis. on Sunday.

MSU placed sixth behind the Badgers, Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and Northwestern.

Junior Ann Somerville finished fourth at the meet, earning All-Big Ten honors. Somerville ran a time of 17:25.

Freshman Michelle Carson was the Spartans’ second-best finisher, running a 17:59 and coming in 19th place. Freshman Jamie Krzyminski finished third on the Spartan team and 23rd overall with an 18:03.

Sophomore Jackie Bergey, junior Katie Bonner, junior Shannon Houseman, freshman Kimi Landane and sophomore Sarah Pepera also ran for MSU.

The championships ended the fall season for both Spartan cross country teams.

Women’s crew

The women’s crew team wrapped up its fall season rowing against some of the premier programs in the nation at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J. on Sunday.

The Spartans placed two boats in the top 10 of the Open Eight race. The A boat finished fourth behind Princeton, Yale and Boston University with a time of 15:32. The B boat placed tenth at 15:47.

MSU had a little more trouble in the Open Four race, as the top Spartan boat, MSU E, finished ninth. The other four Spartan boats in the 33-boat field placed 14th, 29th, 32nd and 33rd overall.

Men’s swimming and diving

The men’s team finished second at the Northwestern Relays in Evanston, Ill. on Sunday.

Host Northwestern won the event with 212 points, ahead of MSU’s 184. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Truman State and Illinois-Chicago also swam at the event.

MSU earned its only win in the 300-yard backstroke relay. Senior Tim Gendler, junior Scott Shafer and senior Mike Tingley won the race with a time of 2:37.85.

The men will next swim at home against Eastern Michigan on Nov. 10.

Women’s swimming and diving

The women’s swimming and diving team also placed second at the Northwestern Relays on Sunday.

The Spartans scored 170 points, finishing 50 points behind champion Northwestern. MSU placed second in the 300-yard butterfly, 300-yard breaststroke, 800-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley, 1500-yard medley, 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley races.

Junior Ildiko Szekely and sophomore Debbie O’Neil were each part of six second-place relay teams.

The women will return to competition on Nov. 18 in Ann Arbor against Michigan and Texas.

Field hockey

The 19th-ranked women’s field hockey team earned the sixth seed and will play third-seeded Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament this Friday in Ann Arbor.

The Spartans topped the Hawkeyes 2-1 at home earlier this season in the only meeting between the teams this season.

The winner of the MSU-Iowa game will face the winner of second-seeded Penn State and seventh-seeded Indiana.

The winner of the tournament receives an automatic NCAA bid.
