Its truly a shame that the Culturas de las Razas Unidas mural on the rock was painted over, (Fraternity paints over heritage message on rock, SN 9/25) a true shame that the members of the CRU didnt have the pride in what they were painting to stay til dawn and defend it.
As long as Ive been going to MSU, the only way to have your message stay on the rock was to defend it til dawn. This incident had nothing to do with racism. It was not a hate crime. It was simply another average night at the rock. The times when I have painted the rock Ive stayed and defended it til dawn. Ive been assaulted, egged, and had paint thrown on me (all much worse than a broken promise), but always stayed with the rock all night.
The next time Maria Garcia-Mugg decides to paint the rock, I hope she uses her energy to stay all night to defend it, rather than saving it to whine and cry to The State News. Maybe if youre going to leave early you should try carving your message into the rock - that seemed to work good for some fraternity. Also Garcia-Mugg, you shouldnt believe everything frat boys tell you.
As for the members of Sigma Alpha Mu, dont worry about repaying the members of the CRU. You already have. Its the teaching of a valuable life lesson they have learned.
