In a time where many athletics programs are struggling to be self-sufficient, MSU is seeing black. According to a report by USA Today, MSU’s athletics department was one of 22 Division I public schools — including seven in the Big Ten, not including Nebraska — to report a net profit in 2010, up from 14 in 2009.

Dantonio named coach of year
After a season in which MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack, missed two games and went on to lead the No. 7 Spartans to their first Big Ten championship in 20 years, Dantonio was named Big Ten Coach of the Year by the Big Ten’s media on Monday.

One step at a time
Coming off a tough loss against Iowa last week and nursing several injuries, No. 10 MSU had plenty of reasons to limp through Saturday’s game against last-place Minnesota and into this week’s bye. Instead, it showed no signs of letdown in Saturday’s 31-8 win. The victory was head coach Mark Dantonio’s 31st tenure win, the highest of any coach’s first four seasons in Spartan history.

The Spartans couldn’t have been much higher heading into the game with No. 15 Iowa (6-2, 3-1). MSU was undefeated, winning its first eight games of the season for the first time in 44 years. And as the only Big Ten team without a loss, the then-No. 5 Spartans were in the driver’s seat to win an outright conference championship.

Making their own luck
Through the first six games of the season, MSU’s fortune was earned on the backs of its linemen and running backs, gritted out in convincing victories against stout opponents. But after back-to-back games where the Spartans looked flat then responded by crushing their opponents, it’s clear there’s some luck on the Spartans’ side, too.

Long time coming
With a 7-0 record, MSU is off to its best start since 1966. For the first time since the same era (1965-67), the Spartans have beaten rival Michigan three consecutive times.

Throughout the season, the Spartan players and coaches have emphasized the taking-it-one-game-at-a-time mantra. And as MSU keeps winning, each game becomes more important, while it also gets easier to look ahead to the next big matchup or dwell on the last big win.

Blood clot forces Dantonio to miss game
After being admitted to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital on Thursday for a blood clot discovered in his leg, football head coach Mark Dantonio was not in Spartan Stadium Saturday for No. 17 MSU’s 34-24 win against No. 20 Wisconsin. Dantonio’s release date from Sparrow Hospital has yet to be determined, but Athletics Director Mark Hollis said the head coach has and will remain in contact with the team.
