Michigan State men’s soccer will have its hands full when the defending NCAA champions, the Maryland Terrapins (6-3-1), come to East Lansing on Oct. 11. It has been somewhat of a slow start for the Spartans (2-6-2), but they will be heading into the game on five days rest, coming off a strong 2-1 victory in overtime on the road against Wisconsin on Oct. 6.

On a beautiful fall day at DeMartin Stadium, the MSU Women’s Soccer team (8-4-1, 1-3-1 Big Ten) was dominated by Iowa’s speed and athleticism (12-2, 4-2 Big Ten), as the Hawkeyes won 3-0. The Lady Spartans were undefeated at DeMartin prior to this matchup, but the Hawkeyes were not intimidated.

In a devastating shut-out, Michigan State soccer fell 0-3 against Penn State (5-1-2) in their Big Ten home opener on Tuesday. The Spartans struggled to put shots on goal, putting up nine, three of which came from Big Ten offensive player of the week Farai Mutatu, against the Nittany Lions. The Spartans moved their record to 1-6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten following the loss.

The future for Michigan State women’s soccer is looking bright with sophomore forward Gia Wahlberg coming into her own in her second season on the team. After not being able to find the back of the net during her freshman campaign, Wahlberg has burst onto the scene through 11 games this season, leading the Big Ten in goals with nine.

On a rainy Sunday afternoon in East Lansing, Michigan State women’s soccer (8-3-0, 1-2-0) came in seeking their first win in Big Ten play of the season against Purdue (6-4-1, 2-2-0) at DeMartin Stadium. They were able to do just that in a defensive battle, staying undefeated at home and fending off the Boilermakers 2-0.

After injuries to redshirt junior defenseman Patrick Nielsen and senior midfielder Giuseppe Barone, both on the watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy and captains of the team, senior midfielder Michael Pimlott is the lone captain on the field for the Spartans. Pimlott led the green and white against No. 20 Notre Dame Tuesday night at DeMartin Stadium, a game in which the team had quality scoring chances, but ultimately ceased in a 1-0 loss.

No. 16 Michigan State men’s soccer (0-1-2) was defeated by the undefeated No. 13 Washington Huskies (3-0-0), receiving their first loss of the season in a 1-0 bout Friday night. The match was MSU’s first top-20 matchup of the year, and despite Spartan goalkeeper Hunter Morse’s seven saves, the Spartans couldn’t generate enough offense to put away the Huskies.

No. 7 Michigan State men’s soccer (0-0-2) drew against the visiting, undefeated, Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (1-0-1) Monday night. After finishing in a draw in their home opener this past Friday, the Spartans looked to get themselves into the win column with a Labor Day victory. Following an Alex Shterenberg goal in the last minute of regulation to tie up the game, the Spartans would go scoreless in two overtimes, ending the game in a draw and pushing their record to 0-0-2.

The Michigan State men’s soccer team played the newly-franchised Lansing Ignite professional team for the Capital Cupon April 16, marking the first time the teams have played head-to-head.

The Michigan State men’s soccer team played the Lansing Ignite FC on Tuesday for the inaugural Capital Cup. Lansing Ignite took home the cup with a final score of 4-0 during this exhibition game. The game took place at Cooley Law School Stadium, which is the home of the Lansing Lugnuts as well as the Lansing Ignite.
