East Lansing City Council elections will take place Nov. 3 with three seats up for vote. There are six candidates and only one incumbent running. The one incumbent is the current mayor, Nathan Triplett. Elections for city council are every two years, with three councilmember’s terms ending one election and two the next. The new council will have to appoint a Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem following the election. Here are the six candidates vying for your vote.

East Lansing City Council took on hate at its August 4 meeting. Council teamed up with Rashida Tlaib, a former state representative, to present a resolution which states that the city supports The Campaign to Take on Hate and is committed to eliminating hate and discrimination. The resolution also says the city agrees to protect all families and citizens of East Lansing no matter religion or ethnicity.

East Lansing Fire Department‘s Matthew Sterling was awarded Paramedic of the Year at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Sterling, a firefighter paramedic, has worked for the department for three years. The award is presented every year by the Sparrow Hospital Emergency Department as part of its Emergency Medical Services week.

At their July 7 meeting, the East Lansing City Council approved site plans and special-use permits for a six-story mixed-use building on the corner of Grand River and Spartan avenues and a Lake Trust Credit Union on West Lake Lansing Road, near Meijer.

East Lansing City Council will likely take action on a major construction project at its July 7 meeting at city hall. The project, if approved, will take place at 1301 and 1307 E. Grand River Ave. and 116-132 Spartan Ave., the site of the old Tasty Twist, and and includes a 6-story mixed-use building with parking and commercial use on the first floor and five-floors of residential use above according to council's agenda.
