Icers fall in front of record crowd at 'Big Chill,' 5-0

December 11, 2010

Junior forward Trevor Nill skates around the back of the net and attempts to make the goal while Michigan opponents prepare to defend their goal Saturday at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

_Ann Arbor, Mich. — Fireworks, an impressive outdoor ice rink and a record crowd 113,411 screaming fans provided quite a spectacle for Saturday’s Big Chill at the Big House.

Unfortunately for the MSU hockey team, its 5-0 loss against the home Wolverines provided the partisan-Michigan crowd with an even more festive atmosphere.

Saturday’s Big Chill had everything a hockey fan could possibly enjoy and more, but all of it went in the home Michigan’s direction after the Wolverines netted two early goals and continued the offensive onslaught to win the highly-anticipated Big Chill at the Big House.

“I thought U-M put on a great show,” MSU head coach Rick Comley said. “It was a tremendous atmosphere. … When you plan something of that magnitude and it comes out that good, they’re to be congratulated.”

The 113,411 fans in attendance was the world record for a hockey game or a game played at Michigan Stadium, and the environment was key for hockey.

Fireworks lit up the stadium after the game as players from both teams watched the completion of months of planning since Michigan announced in January that it would host the event.

U-M defenseman John Merrill scored two early goals — the first from the point at about the eight-minute mark of the period and the second on a tight feed with 5:06 remaining — to put the Wolverines on top early.

As has been the Spartans’ case recently, they struggled to score early, and failed to find the back of the net for the rest of the game.

The Spartans had a 4-on-3 power play about three minutes into the second period and another power play minutes later, but couldn’t convert either despite getting some chances.

After U-M forward Carl Hagelin scored at the 7:48 mark to make it 3-0, the Spartans recorded three or four great chances in the final three minutes of the period, but couldn’t solve U-M goalie Shawn Hunwick.

Hunwick got the unexpected start after U-M goaltender Bryan Hogan got injured in warmups. But even with a different goalie, the Spartans couldn’t find the back of the net.

Hagelin and forward David Wohlberg scored in the third period to complete the Wolverine win.

The Spartans had a goal disallowed at the 11:01 mark of the second period, when junior forward Brett Perlini tapped in a deflection, but officials overturned the call, saying the goal had been dislodged.

“If we were rewarded that goal, it would have been huge for the team,” sophomore defenseman Torey Krug said. “If that goal stood, I think our guys would get a little energy from it.”

Although MSU outshout the Wolverines, 34-29, it was prevented from getting many rebound opportunities by a stout Wolverines’ defense and was shut out for the second game in a row.

However, players said they still relished the atmosphere, which will be remembered as being one of the most exciting college atmospheres and have an attendance record that won’t appear to be broken anytime soon.

“It was kind of a surreal experience,” junior forward Trevor Nill said. “It’s hard to fathom how there were so many people there.”
