Jake Chelios commits to MSU hockey team, joins brother

Jake Chelios, brother of MSU sophomore forward Dean Chelios, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the MSU hockey team next fall.

“Jake himself is an excellent prospect,” MSU hockey head coach Rick Comley said. “He’s got great size, his hockey IQ is tremendous and he has the ability to play both forward and defense.”

After one season in the United States Hockey League, during which he scored 12 goals and had 22 assists in 52 games, Jake Chelios decided to join three other MSU recruits in signing letters of intent for next fall.

Comley said Jake Chelios was deciding between MSU and Wisconsin, where his father, former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, went to school. Ultimately, though, Jake Chelios decided to join his brother, who was a freshman for the Spartans last season.

“I think it’s great,” Comley said. “You always like to keep it in the family. He had other options, which he considered, but in the end, the chance to play with his brother was certainly a strong factor.”
