MSU medical student found dead in Okemos apartment, cause unknown

Tania Borboni

Tania Borboni first aspired to be a doctor when her twin sister got in an accident at 11 years old.

“She hated to see her suffer,” said her mother, Diana Borboni. “From then on she wanted to help people.”

Borboni, a 22-year-old first-year osteopathic medicine student, was found dead Friday in her Okemos apartment. Meridian Township Police could not comment on the ongoing investigation.

Diana Borboni said nothing was found in the autopsy, performed Saturday, and they are awaiting results of a toxicology test, which will be available in eight weeks.

“She did not take drugs,” Diana Borboni said. “When I hear toxicology report I think drugs. I asked everybody if she was taking anything — uppers, downers — to help her get up, or go to sleep. I know med school is stressful. Everyone says no, she didn’t take anything.”

Borboni just graduated from Wayne State University with top honors, Diana Borboni said.

Tiffany Jarois, who met Tania Borboni at Wayne State before both decided to come to MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, said everyone who met Tania loved her.

“She had a spirit about her that people were drawn to,” Jarois said.

“She was the first person to lend a helping hand or an empathetic ear when anyone was in need. The world has lost a truly special and amazing person.”

One of her passions was helping people, Diana Borboni said. She taught catechism at St. Blase Catholic Church in Sterling Heights and volunteered at Karmanos Cancer Institute, Van Dyke Public Schools and Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

“Her heart was with children,” Diana Borboni said. “She wanted to be a neonatal doctor to help newborn children who were sick.”

One of her goals after graduation was to open a free clinic for people who could not afford medical care, Diana Borboni said.

“There’s a lot of people in this country that have no means of getting help,” Diana Borboni said. “That really bothered her.”

Dr. William Falls, associate dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, said she was a good, solid student that got along with her classmates.

“It’s very tragic, she was a very young student. All of our students are getting involved and interacting with her family. It just shows how close the students are,” he said.

Falls notified classmates of her death via e-mail over the weekend.

Borboni is survived by her parents Ottorino and Diana, and sisters Sonia and Nadia.

Visitation is from 2-9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. vigil today at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons Inc., 36900 Schoenherr Road in Sterling Heights. The funeral mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Blase Catholic Church, 12151 E. 15 Mile Road in Sterling Heights.
