MSU volleyball adds new assistant coach to staff
After a successful season under head coach Cathy George, the MSU volleyball team announced it has added a new member to its staff, according to a press release.
The new addition, Jesse Ortiz, will replace JT Wenger, who accepted the head coaching position at the University of Texas-Arlington. As Wenger took a head coaching position, it's the sixth assistant under George who are now head coaches.
Ortiz comes into the program after spending the last three years at Miami University in Ohio. With the RedHawks, Ortiz aided his team to a combined 66-26 record and a 39-9 record within the Mid-American Conference, or MAC.
Prior to his stint with the RedHawks, Ortiz spent three years with Ferris State University in an assistant coach capacity.
"We are very excited to have Jesse join our staff," George said in the release. "He has a tremendous impact on the programs he has been a part of in his coaching career."
The team is coming off a successful season where the Spartans earned the overall No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosted the first two rounds at Jenison Field House. MSU complied an overall record 25-9 and 13-7 in Big Ten conference play before being upset by the University of Arizona in the second round.
