Women's rowing begins 2015 campaign

March 16, 2015

MSU Women's Rowing finished strong last weekend during their season opener at Oakridge Cardinal Invitational in Tennessee hosted by the Louisville Cardinals.

On Saturday, MSU competed against Central Florida, Minnesota and Oklahoma.

They also faced high-ranked No. 2 Virginia and No. 9 Yale. They closed their time margin to only 17 seconds behind Virginia and lowered it to about 7 seconds following Sundays competition.

The teams promising performance compared to No. 2 Virginia shows improvement and capability against high up crews.

The Women's Crew won 4 out of 5 races, saving best for last on Sunday.

MSU competed against Kansas, Alabama and Tennessee. They finished first overall in all their Sunday races placing second only once, in their Varsity Four, by falling to Kansas.

The Crew trained in Fort Gaines, Georgia, preparing for their upcoming season and kickoff invitational.

The rowers jumpstarted their 2015 season with great momentum for what is to come.

The MSU Crew along with several other Big Ten schools are projected for success this season including No. 1 Ohio State, the defending national champions.

The Spartans finished fifth at the 2014 Big Ten Championships with only one boat receiving medals. The Crew's Varsity Four took home Bronze.

Their disappointing results at last years Big Ten could fuel their fire this season particularly in Big Ten races.

MSU's highly competitive fall schedule racing NCAA 2014 qualifiers such as Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame could give them an edge this spring season.

MSU Women's Rowing continues competition in Columbus when they face No. 18 Louisville and No. 12 Notre Dame on March 28.
