MSU upgrades campus cable before move-in

August 14, 2014

MSU's Infrastructure and Planning Facilities have upgraded the TV channels available to students.

Jeff Carpenter, a representative from the department, said MSU renegotiated a contract from 2008 with cable provider Comcast. The contract is extended for another seven years.

Carpenter said the new contract roughly triples the amount of entertainment channels available to students, estimating that about 150 channels are now available to students in residence halls, compared to about 40 before the renegotiation.

"We didn’t have a lot of content in terms of entertainment channels, and it was not comparable to the East Lansing commercial lineup if you were in an apartment," he said.

There has been a lot of student feedback over the last four years, Carpenter said. There are channels that were requested by many students that are now available.

"We made sure that we tried to include as many of the requested channels as possible," he said.

"We dont get to pick and choose what channels we get," Carpenter said. "There are X-number of packages of different channels. But we got more content. We wanted a lot more channels in HD, since everybody's coming with an HDTV. We only had two or three channels in high-def before, now I'd say most of them are available in HD."

Carpenter said that the cost increase was kept very minimal, considering the amount of additional content included now.

Comcast is also offering DVR and premium channels such as Showtime and HBO to students at an extra cost.

In addition, all television sets must be rescanned in order to view the new stations.

A complete lineup can be found here, and more information regarding cable television at MSU can be found here.

New students should be aware that digital-ready televisions are required to view all channels, and the TV guide can be found at channel 22.10.
