MSU reaches goal of doubling study abroad enrollment in China

August 14, 2014

A total of 94 MSU students studied in China during the 2012-13 school year, double the amount of students that studied there in the 2010-11 school year.

In 2009, President Barack Obama announced the “100,000 Strong China” initiative with the goal to increase the number of students studying abroad in China. MSU responded to the initiative by doubling China study abroad enrollment.

The 100,000 Strong China initiative is similar to “Generation Study Abroad,” which is a different initiative from the Institute of International Education, or IIE.

Generation Study Abroad seeks to improve and find new ways to study abroad. The initative has set a goal of increasing study abroad enrollment by the end of the decade.

To support 100,000 Strong China, the Chinese government has created 10,000 “Bridge Scholarships” for American students studying in China.

In cooperation with the 100,000 Strong China initiative, MSU co-produced a film titled “The Dialogue,” which was filmed in China last fall.

The film gives students the opportunity to be exposed to different cultures without having to study abroad.

During an MSU outreach program, International Education Week 2013, the film was screened in approximately 100 high schools, community colleges and universities.

“The Dialogue” will be released for commercial distribution later in 2014.
