MSU transfer guard Bryn Forbes granted NCAA waiver, will play in 2014-15

August 20, 2014

MSU junior guard Bryn Forbes has been granted a NCAA waiver and is eligible to play for the Spartans this upcoming season.

The Lansing native transferred to MSU in June after two years at Cleveland State and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“I’m very thankful to the NCAA for allowing me to play this season. I also want to thank Coach Waters and the Cleveland State program for being supportive of my desire to return home,” Forbes said in a statement released by MSU.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer previously reported Forbes’ sister had medical issues. Forbes also has a son in Lansing.

“Bryn is sincere in his desire to be there for his family,” Head Coach Tom Izzo said in a released statement.

“On the court, he had a great summer shooting the ball, and we expect him to add that to our offense this season. There’s still room for him to improve as a player, but I’ve already enjoyed coaching him in the limited time we’ve had this summer."

Forbes will also reunite with Sexton high school teammate Denzel Valentine, with whom he won two won state titles in 2011 and 2012.

The 6-foot-3, 175 pound guard was the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in 2013. In his two years at Cleveland State, he averaged 14.1 points per game and shot 43 percent from the field.

The Spartans hope the addition of Forbes can bolster a backcourt which loss Keith Appling and Gary Harris to the NBA.
