Couch fires spotted throughout East Lansing in wake of victory

Update, 12:49 p.m.: Police dispatch reports indicate that potentially hundreds of couches are burning throughout the city, with state police en route to Cedar Village.

The situation continues to escalate quickly, according to police.


Couch fires were witnessed throughout East Lansing late Saturday night in the wake of MSU’s victory in the Big Ten Championship game.

Fires were spotted throughout the city, including locations such as Division Street, Ann Street and at the intersection of Spartan Avenue and Frye Street. At least three couches also were spotted burning on Louis Street, and the Cedar Village apartment complex was flooded with people in the wake of the win.

Some reports and social media photos indicated that at least one car also was set on fire, bringing police and fire officials out into the city.

Police dispatch reports indicate hundreds of couches are burning throughout the city, and officials are attempting to clear Cedar Village.
