Graduate Employees Union: TA's weren't paid properly for portion of May 2013

MSU’s Graduate Employees Union, or GEU, will be seeking arbitration after the university denied a grievance filed by the union alleging the improper compensation of more than 300 teaching assistants.

The disagreement stems from article 10, part III of GEU’s collective bargaining agreement with MSU. The agreement delineates the periods of employment for TA’s.

The 2013 spring semester period took place from Jan. 1 to May 15, and the summer semester period took place from May 13 to August 9.

The three day overlap from May 13-15 is the source of the union’s objection. They allege for those days, the university should have paid TA’s for both appointments simultaneously, while they were only paid for one.

In GEU’s formal grievance denial, MSU representatives said they disagree with the union’s assertion, leading GEU to arbitrate the grievance.

Teaching assistants receive appointments by the semester each academic year, consisting of an appointment in fall, spring and summer semesters.
