Councilmember Don Power submitted a letter of resignation effective immediately to the city of East Lansing on Wednesday.
Power was elected in November 2011, taking the seat of former councilmember Roger Peters.
Power could not be immediately reached for comment, but he declined to give a reason for his resignation to the Lansing State Journal.
“I was surprised by the news,” Mayor Pro Tem Nathan Triplett said. “(I) haven’t spoken with him yet, but I appreciated Don’s thoughtful contributions to our council discussions, and I’m sure he’ll continue to contribute within the community.”
City Manager George Lahanas has called a special meeting to discuss the process for finding a replacement. Triplett said the city charter allows 30 days to appoint a replacement, who will serve until the remainder of Power’s seat is up for election in November 2013.
East Lansing has not had to replace a councilmember since 2006, when former Mayor Mark Meadows resigned to run for a seat with the state legislature.
