Women's soccer falls to Rutgers, 1-0

MSU suffered another late defeat, this time at the hands of Big Ten newcomer Rutgers, 1-0.The Spartans (6-3 overall, 0-3 Big Ten) and Scarlet Knights were tied at zero after the first game’s 88 minutes, but Rutgers broke through with a goal in the 89th minute to finish off MSU.Rutgers junior forward Samantha Valliant took a free kick from 20 yards out on the left side and beat MSU redshirt senior goalkeeper

Men's soccer will kick off Big Ten season against Maryland on Friday

This upcoming Friday, the men’s soccer team will take on the Maryland Terrapins in what will be MSU’s first Big Ten game of the season. “We have to refocus, work on some things this week, obviously there’s a huge one on Friday, the guys are already thinking about it and (there’s) a lot of work to do, a lot to work on,” senior defender Ryan Keener said after the game last Sunday.

Women's soccer coach Tom Saxton says MSU will "have to play a complete game" against Wisconsin on Friday

The women’s soccer team will take its undefeated record into the opening weekend of Big Ten conference play. And if it hopes to keep the loss column empty, it will have to defeat two very difficult opponents. MSU (6-0 overall) will take on No. 9 Wisconsin (6-0 overall) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, they will be back it against Minnesota (3-3 overall) at noon. Both games will be home for the Spartans at DeMartin Stadium.

Women's soccer improves to 5-0 with win over IPFW

MSU (5-0 overall) saw new faces make big plays Friday, and the Spartans got out to a quick start against IPFW and never looked back, defeating the Mastadons 3-1 at DeMartin Soccer Complex.Junior midfielder Sarah Kovan scored off of a free kick from junior defender Alexandra Gjonaj in the sixth minute for the Spartans.

Women's soccer improves to 3-0 following victory over Eastern Michigan in home opener

Experience was key for the Spartans Friday afternoon, as three different upperclassmen scored in an early season home victory against in-state rival Eastern Michigan, 3-0.Junior forward Allyson Krause, senior midfielder Megan Marsack, and redshirt junior defender Rachel Van Poppelen scored for MSU (3-0 overall), as the Spartans maintained a perfect record.“Ally Krause played a great game.

Women's soccer defeats San Diego State in season opener

The women’s soccer team kicked off its 2014 season last night, securing a 3-1 victory over San Diego State.The Spartans scored the first goal on a penalty kick by junior defender Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz at the 11th minute, and followed it up with another goal from redshirt junior forward Rachel VanPoppelen in the 29th minute.

Women's soccer sees season end on senior day

In the final game of the season, the MSU women’s soccer team was unable to upset No. 22 Penn State, as the Nittany Lions came away with the 3-0 victory on the back of Maya Hayes’ two goals. Penn State (13-5-1 overall, 7-4 Big Ten) derailed the Spartans (9-8-2 overall, 3-8 Big Ten) on senior day at DeMartin Stadium when they honored lone senior and MSU defender Kelsey Mullen. Mullen injured her knee in early October and missed four games prior to Friday, but head coach Tom Saxton was determined Mullen would play her final game in a Spartan game.
