MSU's game against Indiana Sunday was not only a key Big Ten matchup, it was the start of a rotational shift for Spartan baseball. Junior pitcher Joe Mockbee had appeared in 18 games for the Spartans as a reliever before this weekend.
On Sunday, #23 MSU baseball in the rubber match of a tightly contested conference series between the Spartans (27-9, 8-3 conference) and Indiana (22-15, 7-4). The Spartans move down to third place in the Big Ten after the loss, while Indiana rises to fourth in the conference standings. MSU went with Joe Mockbee on the mound to start the game.
Every Friday afternoon you can see him take the mound for the Spartans. He is the helm of MSU’s pitching staff and for good reason — he is one of the most dominant pitchers in the Big Ten. Redshirt junior Cam Vieaux has pitched a spectacular brand of baseball this season and because of that other teams loathe him, but respect him.
MSU looked to rebound against Indiana for game two of a three game weekend matchup against the Hoosiers. The Spartans dropped a close 3-2 game on Friday but slammed the door on the Hoosiers in game two, defeating Indiana in blowout fashion by a final score of 9-0.
Friday afternoon’s outing against Indiana was an uncharacteristic one for MSU starting left-hander Cam Vieaux. It wasn’t a bad start by any stretch of the imagination — just bad. Prior to the sixth inning against IU, Vieaux had only allowed three hits and two walks through five innings of work while striking out seven Hoosiers.
It was another solid start for redshirt junior Cam Vieaux — but it wasn’t enough for the Spartans who fell to the Hoosiers in game one of a three game weekend set by a final of 3-2.
To designated hitter Matt Byars it was just another hit.
MSU got back into action on Wednesday afternoon, playing their fifth game in the last six days. And after a marginal 1-0 loss to Notre Dame on Tuesday, the Spartans rebounded against Western Michigan and defeated the Broncos by a final score of 6-5.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Spartans welcomed in the Fighting Irish from Notre Dame for a midweek matchup.
MSU men's basketball started its 2015-16 season with a 13-1 start, but that record has been eclipsed by another Spartan team.

Last year it was the Chippewas who came out of Detroit with the last laugh, but on Wednesday night the Spartans claimed victory in the sixth annual Clash at Comerica between MSU and CMU. MSU improved to 23-6 on the season while defeating the Chippewas by a final score of 7-3 after 14 innings of play.
MSU can improve to 3-2 on Wednesday when it plays Central Michigan University at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit for the “Clash at Comerica." The first pitch of the game is set for 7:05 p.m.
After MSU lost the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader against Penn State in surprising fashion, the Spartans got back into action on Tuesday afternoon against the University of Michigan. The two rivals scheduled a last-minute non-conference matchup to make up for games that were rained out. The Spartans ended up victorious in their first meeting of the season, by a final score of 11-5.
Over the weekend, the MSU baseball team traveled out to University Park, Pennsylvania to take on Penn State in a three game weekend series. The Spartans managed to [sweep/take two of three from] the Nittany Lions and improved to a [6-0/5-1] conference record and [21-5/20-6] overall.
There hasn’t been too much baseball being played in East Lansing lately, and that’s mainly because of the chaotic weather the last couple of weeks.
