Gymnastics freshmen battle nerves in first MSU meet

The first time freshman Nicola Deans stepped on to the floor as a member of the MSU gymnastics team, it was an experience different from anything she ever thought it could be. She explained competing in college is totally different than competing in high school or at the club level, adding more nerves to her first meet of the season.

With the start of the 2013 MSU gymnastics season just days away, excitement is buzzing throughout the young and talented Spartan team. The excitement for this season is increased because of the success of the gold-medal-winning USA gymnastics team in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Gymnastics’ season ends at Regionals

When the MSU gymnasts headed into the NCAA Auburn Regional with the No. 6 seed this weekend, they were hoping for a similar result to last year’s tournament appearance, when the Spartans placed in third — falling just short of advancing to the next round. However, it was not to be, as the Spartans placed sixth overall with a team score of 194.050 as Georgia and Oregon State placed first and second, respectively, to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Gymnastics earns bid for NCAA Regionals

The MSU gymnastics team’s season has been extended by another couple of weeks as the Spartans earned a berth to NCAA Regionals. MSU will travel to Auburn and compete on April 7 as the No. 6 seed, along with in-state rival No. 4-seed Michigan.

Gymnasts stay determined for Big Ten Championships despite low ranking

After falling to No. 31 in the regional qualifying score, or RQS, rankings, the MSU gymnasts should be on their heels as they head into the Big Ten Championship in Iowa City, Iowa on Saturday. The Spartans (7-3-1) are coming off a tough 196.025-192.700 road loss to No. 21 Michigan, and their score of 192.700 allowed a couple of teams to jump ahead of them in the rankings, dropping three spots from No. 28 and potentially putting them in the hot seat to be one of the teams left out of the top 36 that qualify for regionals.

Gymnastics closes regular season at Michigan

After the MSU gymnastics team jumped from No. 44 to No. 28 in the Regional Qualifying Score, or RQS, rankings this past week, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Spartans got complacent and fell off a bit in their final meet of the season. But head coach Kathie Klages doesn’t think getting her team to stay focused will be an issue, considering the competition her gymnasts are up against this week.

Gymnastics sweeps Alaska-Anchorage

One week removed from its final meet at Jenison Field House, the MSU gymnastics team swept Alaska-Anchorage in a weekend series that saw the Spartans make the 3,795 mile hike to Wells Fargo Sports Complex in Anchorage.

Spartans defeat Ball State during 'outstanding' meet

With the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Regionals approaching, the MSU gymnastics team badly needed another high score on Friday at Jenison Field House against Ball State. The Spartans got their wish, when they posted a team score above 195 for the second straight week, toppling the Cardinals 195.025-193.300.

Spartans hope to repeat high scores with Ball State at home

One week removed from its highest score of the season, the MSU gymnastics team is prepared to keep its momentum going when it welcomes Ball State to Jenison Field House on Friday night. The Spartans (3-2-1 overall) are riding a three-meet home winning streak, and last Friday’s mark of 195.175 kicked the season average up to 193.118.
