NCAA Tournament for Dummies: terms, people and numbers to know ahead of March Madness

Cinderella team: Similar to the fairytale character, this represents an underdog team that ends up being more successful than their expected tournament performance.  Sleeper/Dark Horse: These two are essentially the same in that they refer to teams that aren’t expected to win, but still stand a chance.  Mid-major: Schools that don’t fall within top tier conferences are assigned this title March Madness: Another term for the tournament, people have called this time of year March Madness because of the unpredictability of the tournament. The Big Dance: Theorized to go along with Cinderella teams, this is another way to say the tournament.

MSU professor and research group create lemur facial recognition system

Lemurs are largely considered to be one of the most endangered species in the world. The 111 scientifically recognized species of the mammal, mostly take habitat in the forests of Madagascar have been losing their habitat, especially since a military coup in 2009. MSU professor and head of the Biometrics Research Group Anil Jain, created a facial recognition system called LemurFaceID.

MSU Tower Guard continues long tradition of helping students with disabilities

Up the narrow stairs and tight walls of Beaumont Tower, the second floor of this MSU landmark is home to one of the most historic clubs on campus. In 1934, the wife of former MSU President Robert Shaw, May Shaw, founded the MSU Tower Guard, which is held in the green and white room in Beaumont Tower. “May Shaw saw a need on campus and she did what she could to fulfill it,” animal science sophomore and president of MSU Tower Guard Marisa Thum said.
