Tissue, please

As the weather continues to get colder, sneezes and coughs are becoming the norm around campus. We all know colds and flu start infecting the area this time of the year, so here's a new idea: Take initiative and get a vaccination before you're stuck in bed with a fever and congested sinuses. The 2002 National College Health Assessment reported that 78 percent of MSU students got a cold or the flu last year.

Green blood

Donating blood doesn't take a lot of time out of your life, but it might add a significant amount of time to someone else's life. The 10th annual blood drive competition between MSU and Pennsylvania State University is now in full swing.

Houston, we...

Though the electricity was fully restored more than two months ago, the light is just beginning to be shed on the problems that led up to the massive Blackout of 2003.

Voter response

There were ups and downs, tears and smiles, victory and disappointment. But it wasn't the latest installment of "Days of Our Lives" - it was Election Day.

International 'U'

Although it's alarming that the number of international students attending U.S. colleges is decreasing, it's encouraging that MSU enrollment numbers counter that trend.

Talking Iraq

The official war in Iraq is over, leaving America with a hefty bill - and we're not just paying with money, but with lives.

Sex education

Public schools have failed to properly educate high school students about safe sex. This is an issue among high school students, and the fact that many schools do not include curriculum covering sex results in it remaining a taboo subject. Lanessa Riobe, 16, was sent home from Osceola High School in Kissimmee, Fla., after she wore a Halloween costume consisting of a T-shirt covered in condoms.

Talking to 'U'

By taking time to listen to student concerns, Trustee David Porteous has made positive progress toward improving the relationship between students and administrators. The more the administration hears from students, the more it will learn about the issues students face. Porteous met Friday with a newly formed student committee.

Weak honor

Bible Week and Church/State Separation Week are nationally recognized the week of Nov. 23-30. However, with the advice of East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows, the city council has decided that Church/State Separation Week will be recognized in East Lansing on Nov.

Moving on

Spartan Stadium is empty, and the fans stopped cheering long ago after this weekend's heartbreaking game, but there is much to be celebrated in East Lansing.

COMMENTARY

Backing Tony

As Lansing residents take to the polls Tuesday to choose a leader for Lansing, we hope they will consider voting for incumbent Mayor Tony Benavides.

COMMENTARY

Rivalry

Go green, go white or go home. Saturday's game is unlike any other Spartan-Wolverine matchup from the recent past.

COMMENTARY

Our letter

If students want to voice higher education concerns to politicians, it's now as simple as writing a letter.

COMMENTARY

Celebration

On Saturday, MSU students need to remember that celebration does not involve destruction. Campus and city officials are encouraging fans not to rush the field when the game is over.

COMMENTARY

'U' wild card

If students are going to talk the talk, they also need to walk the walk. Although polls show great student interest in the 2004 election, it is only the actual votes that count in the end.

On the right track

After claiming to be "sidestepped" by the city council, ASMSU officials are working to rectify the mistakes of the summer by proposing an amendment to the party-noise ordinance.

Judgement

After months of useless bat-swinging by the lower courts, the big, bad U.S. Supreme Court soon will be stepping up to the plate to face the Bush administration's terrorism-fighting strategies.

Time lapse

It's good to see ASMSU taking a stance on the controversial T-shirts circulating campus prior to the MSU-University of Michigan football game - too bad it comes a few weeks late. A bill was sent to both assemblies of MSU's undergraduate student government to finally make a statement against the fliers and T-shirts bearing an explicit drawing and the phrase "Wolverines Pack Fudge." But it isn't until next week when ASMSU might officially denounce the circulation of the explicit anti-U-M T-shirts and fliers.
