COMMENTARY

Rock article was not newsworthy

I am writing in response to the article that appeared in The State News (“Fraternity paints over heritage message on rock,” SN 9/25). After finishing the article I just had to laugh out loud.

COMMENTARY

Good deal

The East Lansing community should thank Jacobson’s for many years of memories and wish it luck as it moves on.

COMMENTARY

Voter registration is pretty simple

The article The State News ran regarding the voter registration deadline was misleading (“Voter registration deadline close,” SN 10/6). Students do not, in fact, have to vote in the city currently listed on their driver’s license.

COMMENTARY

Correction

In the Opinion Page editorial “Major move” (SN 10/6), Alpha Phi Alpha was misspelled.

COMMENTARY

Casting call

Despite past voter turnouts, young adults must establish themselves as a powerful voting bloc. The 26th Amendment of the Constitution guarantees all citizens 18 and older the right to vote and still, young adults constitute the worst showing in general elections. In the 1996 presidential election, roughly 32 percent of those 18 to 24 voted, while only 54 percent of all the voting-age population punched a ticket.

COMMENTARY

Ignorant column disturbs SN reader

Through this letter I hereby proclaim my distaste toward said article by Dottie Boyce (“‘U’ should not have to put up with hate crimes,” SN 10/2). For those of you reading this, the commentary is basically aimed toward Boyce.

COMMENTARY

Hate crime laws need adjustment

I am writing in response to Dottie Boyce’s column (“‘U’ should not have to put up with hate crimes,” SN 10/2) regarding so-called “hate crimes.” I am not going to debate whether the activities in Bailey and Bryan residence halls could be construed as hate crimes or not. What I am here to do is criticize the very nature of hate crime legislation.

COMMENTARY

Country teaches many to be trendy

I am writing in response to the opinion column by Sarah Emery (“Don’t cry over spilled mocha latte with whipped cream,” SN 9/22). I always frown upon articles that bash and trash the very pinnacle of superficiality: trendiness.

COMMENTARY

Major move

Wednesday’s forum in Akers Hall was a positive step by both MSU police and minority student leaders toward improving relations.

COMMENTARY

SN should write on new topics

It seems as though every time I open to the Opinion Page of The State News there is an article holding women’s magazines, certain clothing brands and the like responsible for destroying girl’s self image.
