COMMENTARY

Magazines should not control image

I could not have been happier to see Amanda Clapp’s column (“Girlie magazines destroy teenage girls’ self-esteem,” SN 9/25). Too many girls these days fall victim to the traps set by the media.

COMMENTARY

U students act like high schoolers

I am a senior at East Lansing High school. I got up Friday morning and stumbled upon Sarah Emery’s column (“Don’t cry over spilled mocha latte with whipped cream,” SN 9/22) and my first thought was, “Why hasn’t anyone said anything before now?” Every year I watch the crowds of college students invade the town, take over the coffee shops, bars, bookstores and restaurants of our streets only to cause havoc in the world I know.

COMMENTARY

Clinton shouldnt have released oil

I’m writing in response to the decision made by President Clinton to use 5 percent of the national oil reserves in order to alleviate the high energy prices, specifically at the gas pump. I find his decision to be irresponsible and simply stupid.

COMMENTARY

Rock says

Painters must use common courtesy when covering the rock on Farm Lane with colors. Late Thursday night, members of Culturas de las Razas Unidas painted a message to promote Hispanic Heritage Month on the rock.

COMMENTARY

Candidate vows to continue running

My name is David Kost, and I’m running for Ingham County sheriff. I recently received a registered letter from Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth stating that I was given a 60-day involuntary unpaid leave of absence.

COMMENTARY

SN reader tells U rules of the rock

I am writing in response to Sheena Harrison’s article (“Fraternity paints over heritage message on rock,” SN 9/25). The outrage felt by Culturas de las Razas Unidas has little foundation.

COMMENTARY

Cat-calling needs serious attention

I found Dave Wirth’s letter an embarrassment to himself (“ Runners shouldn’t sweat cat-calling,” SN 9/18). I am surprised that anyone would sit down and carefully type out the display of ignorance that was Wirth’s letter.

COMMENTARY

Satisfactory

MSU students should not worry about being in the minority if they think their courses are too easy. Recently, more than a few have expressed their opinions toward the university required classes - deeming them to be too easy and quite unnecessary.

COMMENTARY

U also should be careful by cars

I was considering writing a letter about driving on campus. When I saw the front page of Thursday’s edition of The State News (“Student concerned with ‘U’ traffic, SN 9/21), it made what I had to say much more important. I drive on campus, as well as drive with my friends on campus.

COMMENTARY

Academics should remain a priority

The stories on Harvard Professor Stephen Jay Gould and discussions with MSU President M. Peter McPherson, Ronald Fisher, director of the Honors College, and others is among the most exciting articles I’ve read in my nearly 40 years at MSU.

COMMENTARY

U guys arent as bad as letter said

I am writing in response to Tom DeKorne's letter (“‘U’ women are not always nice,” SN 9/22). In it he basically said that only shallow, one-night-stand-seeking guys go to bars or parties.

COMMENTARY

Share Wealth

MSU President M. Peter McPherson’s $25,000 bonus is an insult to MSU’s underpaid faculty.

COMMENTARY

SN shouldnt run voucher letters

I am writing in response to the two political letters that were printed in The State News (“Michigan proposal goes against ban,” SN 9/21 and “Vouchers combine church and state,” SN 9/21). I would like to know why people write these letters, and why The State News feels they absolutely must print them? I write several letters to the editor a year.
