Dont support tax increase for ASMSU

Don’t be ambivalent enough to let ASMSU representatives outvote the vast majority of us who are sick of them spending our money on fruitless ventures. Why should you care about $16 of your money?

COMMENTARY

Worth it

Raising $15,000 in 30 days is a lofty goal for organizers of annual Michigan Pride events, but it can be done.

COMMENTARY

Library for studying, not for socializing

Throughout my four years at MSU, distractions have always been present in the Main Library. What was formerly a place of study has become a plethora of chaotic stimuli, ranging from laptop computer games, ringing cell phones and coffee shop talk.

COMMENTARY

Spilled milk

Instead of complaining about his team’s spot in the NCAA Tournament, MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo should be a positive force for the Spartans as they head back to Bracketville this year. Izzo was right to predict he would “get ripped for crying over spilled milk” by complaining about the team’s No.

COMMENTARY

Not the answer

Although the University of Michigan’s graduate student union held a one-day walkout Monday, MSU’s Graduate Employees Union should not follow suit.

COMMENTARY

Dont judge people you dont know

Rarely do I feel it necessary to respond publicly to the opinions of others, but Rebecca Daneff’s letter (“Honors College Ball not worth coverage,” SN 2/28) is so outrageous that I feel I must. As a former honors college student at my previous institution, I take personal exception to Daneff’s labeling of all Honors College students as “repressed” or “given a newfound freedom.” For anyone who knows me, those are the last words that will come to mind.

COMMENTARY

Students should be supportive of union

On Monday, I decided to support the Graduate Employees Union by not going to class. But unlike many students who took this opportunity to skip class, I am writing this letter to The State News to show my support for the teaching assistants of MSU.

COMMENTARY

U funding affected by the war on drugs

Blame prohibition of drugs for the reason there will be no funding increase for MSU next year. Since three-fourths of felony crime touches the war on drugs, imagine what a peace dividend there would be if we ended prohibition.

COMMENTARY

SN endorses

If university apartment residents want to better their living conditions, the University Apartments’ Council of Residents is their best avenue.

COMMENTARY

Hate doesnt belong on newspaper page

I’m pleased to see that the current State News editorial board feels the opinion page shouldn’t be used to foment hatred and intolerance (“Moral choice,” SN 3/1). I wish previous editorial boards had realized that publishing opinion columns and letters expressing negative beliefs about homosexual people is exactly the same kind of incitement to hatred and intolerance.

COMMENTARY

Candidate portrayed incorrectly in article

I was happy to see The State News is covering Ray Ziarno, the Green Party candidate for secretary of state (“Secretary of State race up for grabs,” SN 2/27). It’s good to see The State News covering more than the two major parties.

COMMENTARY

Review showed bias against goth kids

There are few things in this world funnier than people who try to tear apart something they don’t understand (“‘Damned’ is goth at its worst,” SN 2/25). I do not feel it is appropriate to generalize a group of people as clowns or imply that all “goth kids” are the same.

COMMENTARY

SN endorses

ASMSU is asking for more money out of students’ pockets, but the organization isn’t providing enough information to sell its plan to the undergraduate population. The organization wants student taxpayers to spend an extra $3 per semester on its services, upping its semesterly per student revenue from $13 to $16.

COMMENTARY

Freedom of speech has responsibilities

Your editorial on the publication of the hateful column in Wayne State University’s student newspaper was very well done (“Moral choice,” SN 3/1). It is always important to remind people that along with rights come responsibilities.
