Fraternity showed LBGT insensitivity

In Wednesday’s article “T-shirts prompt greek action” (SN 4/10), Murat Bashelvaci is paraphrased as saying fraternity members didn’t want to harm anyone. Let me get this straight.

COMMENTARY

Good move

While it sometimes can seem only bad things can come from bad situations, former Lansing Councilmember Louis Adado did a good thing Monday night by resigning from his leadership position.Adado’s decision came on the heels of accusations from two city council staff members, who claim he sexually harassed them.

COMMENTARY

Playboy ad not part of the big problem

I am writing in response to Jennifer Waldron and Brenda Fite’s letter to the editor (“Lack of judgment used in running ad,” SN 4/5). Playboy magazine is not out to injure or defame anyone.

COMMENTARY

With graduation nearing, one should stop and remember childhood

It’s been a long road. I’ve stumbled to early morning classes for five years, pretended to take notes, kept from nodding off and ultimately somehow earned adequate grades. Now, nearly half a decade after beginning a collegiate career I sincerely enjoyed, the time is swiftly approaching when I’m being forced to realize that perhaps, at age 23, it’s time to grow up. Graduation is in May.

COMMENTARY

Students deserve to face charges

In his column, Andrew Banyai does have a good point in that “it’s very comfortable to have someone to blame” (“Students shouldn’t be charged for death,” SN 4/9). But he misses the point that these people did break the law.

COMMENTARY

Kundi doesnt know what hes writing

In response to Rishi Kundi’s column “Making sense of Middle East violence is impossible” (SN 4/4). He states, “I, and most likely all of you, are totally in the dark about events across the world,” then decides to spit out his opinion anyway.

COMMENTARY

Fair rates

Students living in residence halls next year may have to pay a little more for free Ethernet connections, community bathrooms and daily meals courtesy of the cafeteria, but they shouldn’t complain much.On Friday, the MSU Board of Trustees is expected to raise the cost of living in the residence halls for the 11th straight year.

COMMENTARY

Students shouldnt be charged for death

This inquisition must be stopped. Police and Ingham County prosecutors hope dragging five MSU students through criminal court will help teach other students about the dangers of excessive drinking.

COMMENTARY

City doesnt revolve around U students

In response to Craig Sopo’s letter, “City government not college-oriented” (SN 4/5), I agree with him on Mayor Pro Tem Sam Singh’s comments regarding the city’s priorities with students.

COMMENTARY

Rich ropes

It’s a nice thought for the ASMSU Student Assembly to approve pay for a ropes challenge course on campus.

COMMENTARY

E.L. rental program good for everyone

I was saddened to read the State News editorial “Housing help” (SN 4/4). It seriously misinterprets the city’s intent for some preliminary discussion of a possible rental buyback program. If such a program were to be put in place, it would be intended to address vacancies left in our high rental neighborhoods because students have moved to new luxury apartments to the north of East Lansing in Bath Township.

COMMENTARY

Rail ways

Kudos to MSU leaders for moving forward with plans to construct two rail underpasses on Farm Lane. It is a project that is long overdue and will help make foot, bicycle and automobile traffic in the area more safe and swift. Although construction is not expected to begin until at least 2005, the two underpasses would be erected between Mount Hope and Trowbridge roads and could cost as much as $25 million. MSU President M.

Something has to be done in Middle East

I have read Rishi Kundi’s columns for the past year and every time I am amazed by his ability to offer insight into current events while twisting in a little humor so it is accessible to all who read.

COMMENTARY

Playboy ad offensive, objectifies women

I cannot believe The State News published an advertisement from Playboy. As close as some of the advertisements have come to being pornographic or objectifying women, I find it hard to swallow you actually published an ad from someone who sells the stuff.

COMMENTARY

Cultural show poster has incorrect map

I’m writing in regard to the State News article about Satrang held by the Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students (“Annual event will show Indian culture,” SN 4/5). I really appreciate the students’ efforts in celebrating the glory of India, its rich cultural tradition and its vibrant diversity.

COMMENTARY

Change jobs if you want more benefits

This letter is in response to the article “Student makes stand with billboard” (SN 4/4). I was an employee of Sam’s Club during the summer and Christmas breaks and intend to return this summer.

COMMENTARY

College, city should be working together

I have to take issue with the State News editorial “Housing help” (SN 4/4). The university needs a local community so, among other activities, students can buy groceries, gasoline, clothes, get medical, dental and legal services, and go to church.

COMMENTARY

Rad ad

Instead of criticizing MSU and Anheuser-Busch Inc. for joining forces for commercial time slots during the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, the American Medical Association should be commending the two organizations for sending a positive message. Sparty, along with seven other well-recognized college mascots, appeared in a 30-second commercial sponsored by Anheuser-Busch and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges to promote responsible alcohol consumption. The commercial begins by focusing on a basketball coach who is giving his off-camera squad a pep talk. “The way you celebrate says a lot about you,” he says.

COMMENTARY

Switching seats

With many officials making plans to run for different government posts when their terms are up, it seems the real motive behind using term limits has been put to the wayside.
